Rest & Restore Protocol

The Rest & Restore (RRP) is an Occupational Therapy based intervention provided at TCTCI. Therapists that provide RRP at TCTCI have advanced training in listening therapy programs, psychology background, and have completed both the SSP and RRP Training program through the Unyte Educational Program. The RRP Intensive is designed to support regulation of the autonomic nervous system, enhance self-regulation skills, and facilitate recovery following periods of stress, sensory overload, or therapeutic demand. It was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, a neuroscientist, and Anthony Gorry, a music and audio innovator. The RRP foundation is based on decades of research studying physiological rhythms in the body that include heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure; alongside expertise in advanced sound technology.

The science behind the RRP includes research on the therapeutic benefits of music. Music is universal and music-induced neuroplastic changes have been found to improve emotions, behavior, sensations, and cognition. Music has an impact on the autonomic stage and can balance the sensory region of the brain resulting in decreased stress hormones “cortisol” and studies have shown decreased levels of stress hormones after a musical intervention. The RRP uses key musical principles such as temp to engage with the client’s autonomic nervous system, specifically the Vagus Nerve (Cranial Nerve 10) to have a therapeutic impact on the client’s biobehavioral state and well-being. In a nutshell it helps the body to feel a calm and have a safe place for restoration.

The RRP is a 10-day OT intensive and can be done as a combination of both home and clinic. IT is vital for the first 2 sessions to be in clinic to assure the client response therapeutically with the intervention. AT TCTCI, we blend a clinic and home experience to assure the clinical progression of the program alongside balancing the needs of the client. The program is monitored by a trained Occupational Therapist via the Clinical portal when the client is completing the program at home. We are also providing options for parents to complete the protocol with Dr. Zapf through a consultation process as we know the program benefits both clients and parents. “In order for our children to be regulated, parents also need to feel regulated” If you are interested in the RRP Protocol through TCTCI, please talk with your therapist regarding the intervention or call our office for more details.

**Please make sure you are under the supervision of a qualified trained therapist when using the SSP, RRP, or other Listening Programs.

Mrs. Walz reports her son’s response to the RRP: “after Liam completed the program we noticed his OCD was much better. He is now able to handle change and not ask me repetitive questions to soothe himself. I can give him a visual schedule and he is fine with the plan. We also noticed that he is laughing more and getting along better with others. I noticed with my husband with Liam being okay, the rest of the family is feeling happier because Liam is much happier!”

As a parent trialing the program, Mrs. Walz reports: “after day 3, I noticed my anxiety getting a lot better. And as time went on, I was able to handle more of my day and stay more positive. feeling more aware of my stress level and practice stress relaxing techniques. I feel I am better to handle more of life better than I was before”.
