Occupational Therapy

TCTCI believes that effective treatment for individuals with developmental and learning differences begins with focusing on the whole person. This starts with recognizing each person’s unique strengths, challenges, and potential and bringing together a collaborative team to foster growth, independence, and meaningful progress across all areas of life. One of the key partners in this journey is working with an Occupational Therapist.

Occupational therapy promotes health, well-being, and independence through everyday activities, what we call “occupations.” These are the meaningful tasks that make up the job of living. For infants, occupations include sleeping, feeding, bonding with caregivers, and discovering the world through touch and vision. As children grow, their occupations shift to playing, learning, making friends, and developing the skills to care for themselves. During adolescence and young adulthood, these roles expand to include preparing for work or further education, managing daily life, forming relationships, staying healthy, and becoming active members of their communities.

Pediatric occupational therapy at TCTCI is aimed at meeting the individual needs of each child through purposeful activities that keep your child motivated and engaged in the therapeutic process. Our occupational therapists strive to build a therapeutic relationship with your child that is built on trust and acceptance. In our clinic you will see many play-based activities and equipment, as pediatric occupational therapy is designed to feel like play but our highly-trained therapists use strategies in many specialty areas to build upon your child skills and progress them towards mastering their therapeutic goals needed for independence. Our therapists are experts in adapting the activity or environment and providing the “just right challenge” so that your child is successful. We place great importance on working closely with parents and caregivers. Parents are encouraged to engage in their child’s treatment session. We work to provide home programs and activities for carryover in the home setting. Our occupational therapists at TCTCI are mentored in Sensory Integration strategies or have taken advanced training courses on sensory-based interventions and other cutting edge therapies.

This was the first year we had a really good summer with a lot of family time. We were able to go to parks, trails, restaurants, the zoo, and other places. We could have never done that before due to my son’s sensory issues and autism. Since this past year he has been doing occupational therapy and no other therapy, I am certain that OT has helped my son so that he could engage and enjoy in activities with his family.
